What to Wear to Your Lifestyle Family Session (Spring) | Charlotte Lifestyle Photographer

March 16, 2021

Spring is approaching. It’s a time of new growth, blooms about, ample rain, warmer days and more sunlight in the evening hours. It’s also a popular time to book a photography session.

And once you’ve committed, there’s one question that’s bound to come up: what should I/we wear?

While I prefer not to tell you what to wear, because what you wear should reflect who you are, and what you are most comfortable in, I appreciate suggestions as well as anyone else. My daily go-to is jeans or gym clothes—not ideal for a family investment like photography ;)

However, I love having occasions to get out of my comfort clothes or jazz them up a bit which is easy to do with denim.

So, I will share a few outfitting tips and share just a few examples of coordinated family outfits to get you inspired and off to a good start when deciding what to wear.

3 Tips for What to Wear to Your Spring Family Lifestyle Session

Tip # 1: Layers

Spring weather is unpredictable and can offer cool days and evenings. Layering is a great way to prepare for comfort and cooler weather. Cardigans, denim jackets or blazers, and/or a light sweater will layer nicely with any of the following examples and can be removed if it becomes too warm.

Tip # 2: Coordinate the Family Around One Color

These days, coordinating is preferred to matching. Long are the days of everyone wearing khakis and white and all denim (at least, I hope it is). Pick a color you love, and work around it! Solid or small patterns and muted tones work best as they do not compete with each other and muted tones are kinder to the skin (colors reflect color).

Tip # 3 (My personal favorite) Wear What is Reflective of You.

At the end of the day, what matters most is that you feel good in what you're wearing, and that you are comfortable. After all, this is scheduled, intentional time with your loved ones. This is the time to play, to connect, to laugh, to hug; to get down on the ground and engage with your family. What you wear is not nearly as important as being present and enjoying the experience.
